Lists are one of Alexa’s most amazingly useful features.
Every single day there are moments when I need to keep track of something – and all I have to do is to call out a reminder. No need to find a pencil, or pull out my phone!
If I’m cooking and I realize we are low on eggs, I just call out “Alexa, add eggs to the shopping list” – and she does. I can forget about it and get back to cooking, without the side distraction of hunting for my list.
Alexa starts with two kinds of lists – Shopping Lists and To-Do lists – but you can create more if you like.
To add something to a list, you can say “Alexa, I need…” and she is pretty good about figuring out which list to add it to.
“Alexa, I need paper towels” will get a response of “I’ve added paper towels to your shopping list”, while “Alexa, I need to vacuum the house” will make her say “I’ve added ‘Vacuum the House’ to your To-Do list”.
If you want to be more specific, you can say “Alexa, add laundry soap to my shopping list”.
Creating a new list
To create a new list, just say, “Alexa, create a list.” Alexa will then prompt you to the name the list, and ask you if there is anything you wish to add to it. Once created, you can find your new list in the Alexa mobile app.
Checking your lists
There are two ways to check your lists.
You can ask Alexa, “Alexa, what’s on my shopping list?”, or “Alexa, read my to-do list”. Be ready with a pen and paper – she will read the list to you, five items at a time.
Or, you can get on the Alexa app, on the web or on your phone, and see the list under “Lists”. You can copy the list from there, or if you are hooked up to a printer, hit the ‘Print’ button in the upper right hand corner.
You can edit individual items on the list by clicking on them – a little pencil icon will appear. Click on that and you can edit the item
The only way to remove items from your list is from the Alexa app itself. At this time Alexa doesn’t support verbally removing items. Just check the boxes next to the items you cant to remove, and click the ‘Delete’ button that appears to the far right of the item.
